New HISD employees were officially welcomed to the district at an orientation and informational fair held July 22 at West Briar Middle School.

Keynote speaker Jim “Mattress Mac” McIngvale thanked attendees for their commitment to public education and for making a difference in the lives of Houston’s children. “You have a hard and often thankless job ahead of you,” he said, “but you alone, as one person, can make a tremendous impact on another human being.”

HISD Board of Education President Greg Meyers also welcomed the new members of Team HISD and spoke of the commitment he and his fellow trustees have for improving student achievement in Houston. Afterwards, participants attended a vendor and informational fair featuring representatives from various HISD departments, including Risk Management, Benefits, Information Services and College and Career Readiness.

New teachers and teaching assistants also participated in a hands-on “ASPIRE for the Future” map activity. Entertainment was provided by students from the Ortiz Middle School jazz band.
